CITIUS is a crowdsourcing solution for building smart transportation services without investing on large sensor networks. It builds on a smartphone application that collects and analyzes user movement data, detects the type of movement and stores information in a repository for further analysis. Combining analytics and open data, cities can better support urban design decisions, such as where to build the next car parking or where to draw the next bicycle lane. Companies can access predictive analytics and forecastings on the expected number of movers on a daily basis or on a special day. They can also respond to real-time events such as traffic congestions or human congestions by sending more vehicles. Finally, they can offer premium alert and notification services concerning the position of their moving units.
We have already developed a smartphone application, which is able to collect and analyse user movement data and understand how users (drivers, bikers, walkers) move within the city. Now, we are ready to combine the smartphone application with big data analytics offered by FIWARE enablers, and create a solution for cities and companies that seek for a budget and easy to use alternative to sensor networks. Our challenge is to motivate end users to participate to this crowdsourcing model. This will be done by providing added value services and real-life rewards, to our premium contributors.
CITIUS will utilize FIWARE GEs to build cutting edge applications and services upon the existing app. FIWARE technology will provide the flexibility that CITIUS wants to offer and thus allow the development of several products that will attract customers from different disciplines. FIWARE technology will accelerate the development and deployment of the solution, through the standardisation of interfaces between the different building components.
The backend of CITIUS is mostly based on FIWARE technology. Several Generic Enablers are integrated in the CITIUS architecture:
● Identity Management – KeyRock and Authorization PDP – AuthZForce, offer a stable solution for guaranteeing the acknowledgement of contribution and privacy in the same time, for authentication and access control.
● Social Network and Leaderboard GE are used to motivate users to contribute to CITIUS and receive real-life rewards
● Complex Event Processing (CEP) – Proactive Technology Online for creating alerts based on real-time analytics provided by BigData Analysis – Cosmos, which processes the collected movement data
● Orion Context Broker and POI DP in order to organize and deliver POI information retrieved from open data sources.
Benefits & accomplishments
The power of CITIUS is the high benefit-cost ratio that it offers; it minimizes the cost for infrastructure (for sensors etc) by taking advantage of citizens’ smartphones and maximizes the benefits for local government and individuals by providing alerts and analytics services. The suggested model can be easily adopted by cities that wish to minimize infrastructure costs and want to listen to citizens’ needs before developing smart city solutions. CITIUS also creates a new market for advertising of city-related services provided by companies (e.g. parking companies) and individuals (e.g. taxi drivers) and a new type of ‘citizen sourced’ open data.
Several municipalities and private companies in the area of Athens, Greece, have already expressed the interest to use our solution and to become CITIUS users.
The successful implementation of CITIUS in Athens, will demonstrate the benefits from the use of FIWARE enablers in smart mobility solutions, and the capabilities of the data analytics solutions both in device and repository level.
